Thyristors - SCRs

The SCR, also known as Silicon Controll Rectifier, is a three-terminal device which can control large amounts of current and voltage and can be split into two main categories including unipolar and bipolar. This device is most commonly used as an on-off switch, where any signal on the gates can switch the device on and then off when there is no signal. VS-110RKI40 is a new SCR designed for various applications which requires high voltage.

Application Field

VS-110RKI40 is suitable for medium and high power applications such as motor control and power line surge protection. It has a wide operating voltage range of 800V-1800V and a maximum current rating of 650A. It has a unique technology featured with low control power and low temperature rise, that allows it run with high power and high temperature and low switching losses. It also has a complete optional package with weather proof baseplate which provides best protection in harsh environmental, making it perfect for outdoor applications.

Working Principle

The VS-110RKI40 SCR is a four-layer, three-terminal semiconductor device consisting of two P-type and two N-type layers separated by two interlayer screens. The two P-type layers create two PN junctions, and the two N-type layers create two PN junctions and two ohmic contacts for the gate, cathode and anode solution configurations. When a positive signal is applied to the gate terminal, it creates a channel between the two ohmic contacts in the middle of the device which renders it in a conductive state. This will allow current flow from the anode to the cathode and the switch is then on. Conversely, when the signal is removed from the gate terminal, the channel is blocked, and the switch is then off.
