Thyristors - SCRs

The VS-25RIA120 is a thyristor in the form of a control element. It is a semiconductor device and part of a group known as a silicon controlled rectifier or SCR. This device utilizes a four-layer, alternating N and P type material for the purpose of controlling current flow through the material.

The thyristors have an active region where ac or dc power is applied to the different regions. During this operation, the four layers can be said to be an equivalent circuit, with the gate as a controlling component. When the gate is triggered, current starts to flow through the active region, as current enters the device, known as the “driving current”. This current passes through the two outer sections of the thyristor, the anode and cathode, which can be thought of as two current electrodes.

When the current passes through the thyristor, it generates a voltage across the two electrodes, known as the on-state voltage, which increases the flow of current through the device. This increases the flow of current to the load, allowing the load to now draw more current than before the thyristor was turned on. It also increases power dissipation from the thyristor itself again due to increased current flow, as well as increased voltage dropping across it.

The output of the VS-25RIA120 is a shaped sine-wave whose amplitude and shape are unchanged over the entire frequency range. This device has a high transition frequency of up to 5KHz and can be used in AC and DC applications. This is suitable for applications such as power electronics where the device is used to provide a controlled output current which helps provide a regulated output voltage.

This thyristor is mainly used in applications where a good level of efficiency and control are required, while also maintaining a low level of power dissipation. This is where the four layers of the device become an important part of the design.
