VS-40HFLR10S02 is a module in the vast range of Single-Phase Ultrafast Rectifiers produced by Vishay. This module falls into the category of Diodes – Rectifiers – Single and has a maximum peak repeated reverse voltage of 400V, a forward voltage drop at 84A of 1.7V and a total series resistance of 0.0035 ohms. Being of the Ultrafast variety, this part has a low recovery time of 75nsec and a fast forward recovery time of 85nsec. The capacitance is also rather low at 4nF per diode.The main application fields for these parts are in various power supplies and converters, especially in power supplies for Uninterruptible Power Supplies (UPS). It provides the rectification of the input AC to provide a DC output. By using an Ultrafast rectifier such as the VS-40HFLR10S02, the power supply can reach a higher efficiency since they have a lower forward voltage drop and lower conduction losses. Being able to dissipate 1.2kW in a single package makes the part reliable for use in high power applications. Other applications for the VS-40HFLR10S02 are DC-DC converters and motor drives where the diode must be able to handle high power currents.The working principle of a single-phase Ultrafast rectifier is relatively simple. When the input voltage reaches a certain threshold usually defined by the forward voltage drop of the diode, the diode will become forward-biased and will start conducting. At this point, current is allowed to flow through the diode, in the same direction as the arrow symbols on the package. As the current flows through the diode, it will slowly start to build up until it reaches a maximum, limited by the internal resistance of the module. As the input voltage falls, the current will keep flowing until the internal resistance of the module is reached. At this point, the current flow will stop and the energy stored in the magnetic field is released, resulting in a fast recovery of the rectifying diode.This method of rectification is much more efficient than traditional Diode Rectifiers, since it reduces the power losses and increases power density. By using Ultrafast Rectifiers such as the VS-40HFLR10S02, the power supplies and converters become much more efficient, leading to improved system performance and reliability. Operating the VS-40HFLR10S02 is relatively simple. The part should be mounted on a properly sized heat sink and connected to the power supply. The power supply should be able to supply a peak current of 84A at 400V. Once the module is connected and powered up, the current flow should start and the input AC waveform should be rectified. The maximum DC output, however, is limited by the maximum forward current of the diode. In the VS-40HFLR10S02, the maximum DC output is limited to 104A. The module should not be operated beyond the maximum reverse voltage of 600V. The VS-40HFLR10S02 can also be operated in an ambient temperature range of -40°C to +125°C.In conclusion, the VS-40HFLR10S02 is a very efficient single-phase Ultrafast Rectifier and is ideal for use in Uninterruptible Power Supplies, DC-DC converters and motor drive applications.
