Thyristors - SCRs
The VS-50RIA80M is a silicoset thyristor (SCR) designed for general purpose power switching applications such as static switching, motor speed or phase control and rectifier switching. This bi-directional device is constructed of two independent SCRs in a single package. The SCRs are interlocked to provide a three-terminal, latched bi-directional device.

Working Principle
The VS-50RIA80M is a two-terminal, SCR-based device that uses voltage gating to control current. An SCR is a semiconductor device composed of two separated P-N-P-N layers, with the inner layers connected together at a common terminal called the "gate". When a voltage is applied between the gate and anode terminal, the SCR acts like a switch and conducts current.
The device has three main states: off, forward-blocking and forward-conducting. When the voltage applied to the gates is less than the rated "gated voltage" of the SCR, the device is in its off state, meaning it does not conduct current.
When the gate voltage is greater than the breakover voltage of the SCR, the device is in its forward-blocking state and current can only flow from the anode to the cathode. When the gate voltage exceeds the rated gate current, the device is in its forward-conducting state and current can now flow from either the anode or the cathode.
The SCR is controlled using a current switch. When the desired current is reached, a control signal is sent to the SCR, activating it. The control signal also turns off the current switch, preventing any further current from running through the SCR and allowing it to cool down.
The VS-50RIA80M is a high-current device, rated for currents up to 50 A. The device provides excellent temperature stability, leakage and surge capabilities, ideal for power conversion applications.
