Diodes - Rectifiers - Single
Diodes are basic electronic components used for converting electrical energy from one form to another. The VS-MURB820TRRPBF is a single rectifier diode, and belongs to the family of semiconductor diodes. It functions as a one-way electrical valve, allowing current to flow in one direction only with low resistance when forward biased and blocking the reverse current from flowing.
Application Field
The VS-MURB820TRRPBF diode was originally designed as a bridge rectifier for high-voltage applications such as in AC/DC power supplies. They are also applicable in automotive, home appliance, and lighting control applications. This diode is suited for general rectification and switching applications in consumer and industrial electronics.
Working Principle
The working principle of the diode is based on the principle of PN junction. In the diode, two types of materials are connected in a P-N junction; the one with more electrons (N-type material) and the one with more holes (P-type material). When a bias voltage is applied to the diode, the electrons from N-type material move towards P-type material, and the holes from the P-type material move towards the N-type material. As the electrons from the N-type approach the P-type, they are attracted towards it and form a depletion layer within the junction which acts like an insulator and blocks the flow of current.
This rejection or blocking of electrons can be reversed when a sufficient forward bias voltage is applied. When a forward bias voltage is applied, the bias voltage overcomes the depletion layer created at the PN junction and allows electrons to flow from the N-type material to the P-type material, thus forming a conduction path and allowing current to flow.
The single diode rectifier is the simplest form of rectifiers and the one most commonly used in power supplies to convert AC input voltage to DC output voltage. A bridge rectifier is basically four single diodes connected together in a bridge-like configuration as shown in Figure 1.
Figure 1: Bridge Rectifier Configuration
It receives an AC input voltage (VIN) and outputs a DC voltage (VOUT). The peak voltage of the AC input voltage is rectified by the diode, where each diode will conduct current during the positive or negative half cycles. The resulting DC output voltage is a combination of several AC input voltage cycles, resulting in a pulsating DC voltage.
The VS-MURB820TRRPBF has a 600V high working voltage and an impressive 800A peak forward current surge, which makes it ideal for these applications. It also has a low forward voltage drop, high speed switching and a low leakage current, making it suitable for high frequency applications with low power dissipation.
In conclusion, the VS-MURB820TRRPBF is an ideal choice for many rectifier applications, such as AC/DC power supplies and automotive electronics, due to its high working voltage and peak surge capability, as well as its low forward voltage drop and low leakage current.
