Thyristors - SCRs

VS-ST330S14P0PBF is a kind of Thyristor – SCR (silicon controlled rectifier). It has two main applications, including AC voltage- and current regulation, as well as regenerative braking of DC motors.

Working Principle

The SCR works using a gate signal to control the current in the circuit. The SCR includes a three-layer semiconductor structure, a N-type layer of silicon sandwiched between two P-type layers. When a positive gate signal is applied, it creates a channel in the N-type layer, allowing current to flow from one end of the SCR to the other.

When the current reaches a certain level, it activates a second terminal, the ‘gate’ terminal, which triggers the SCR to switch off and not allow the current to flow. The SCR then stays in this ‘off’ state until the gate signal is removed.

The thyristor can be used to regulate either AC or DC currents. When used to control AC currents, the gate signal is generated by a voltage reference such as a transformer, allowing the SCR to take control of the voltage and current in the circuit. Similarly, the gate signal in a DC circuit is generated from the current itself.

Application Field

The most common application of SCRs is for the control of AC voltages and currents. This is used in applications such as power supplies, light dimmers, motor speed control and ovens.

The SCR can also be used to regulate and brake DC motors, as the thyristor allows current to be recycled to the source, and convert the kinetic energy of a motor into electrical energy. This is often used in applications such as electric lifts and conveyors.

Other applications of the thyristor include the control of lighting, power tools and electric motors. SCRs are often used in the automotive industry, helping to control the current and performance of car engines.
