Working Principle

The working principle of a SCR is based on the PNPN structure. It consists of three layers of P type and N type silicon. The PNPN structure possesses two PN junctions, one formed between an N-type and P-type layer and the other between two P-type layers.

The middle P-type layer is also called the “gate”. It is this portion of the SCR which acts as the switch. If a small current is applied to the gate, it changes the conductivity of the device and current can start flowing through the device. This is known as “triggering” the SCR.

Once the SCR is in the “ON” state, no current is necessary to maintain the conducting state. This is known as the “latching” state of the device. The only way of turning it off is to reduce the current through the device to zero. This is known as “commutation” or “turning off” the device.

The VS-ST333S08PFL0 SCR is a line-controlled device, which means that it is triggered by a voltage signal. A positive voltage, when applied to the gate of the SCR, causes it to “turn on”, thereby allowing current to flow. The current can be either constant or pulsed.

The current flow through the device is then regulated by adjusting the line voltage. The SCR can be “turned off” by reducing the gate voltage to zero.
