    VTO39-12HO7 is a Thyristor Surge Suppressor that acts as an overvoltage protection device. It comprises of a number of series connected thyristors in a single package for lateral conduction. It provides protection to residential and office buildings, telecommunication networks, industrial automation and control systems, medical equipment, industrial railways and digital systems against transient overvoltage conditions or against Electro Magnetic Interference (EMI).

    Working Principle

    VTO39-12HO7 consists of two key components: an overvoltage conditioner and a DC spark gap. The overvoltage conditioner consists of two silicon components connected in series, an avalanche diode and a thyristor.When the device is Transistor Controlled Oscillator (TCO), andthe input is a standard AC voltage, the space charge region between the diode and thyristor will locally exceed the avalanche breakdown voltage. The avalanche diode will then be triggered generating plasma and preserving the terminal spike form voltage.The DC spark gap and a pre-charged interlocking capacitor enable the thyristor to remain in its cut-off state. The TCO output is then adjusted so that the spike form voltage will trigger the thyristor and the plasma will again be generated.This process is repeated until the falling edge of the spike form voltage has returned to zero. The thyristor will then remain off until the next input spike form voltage arrives.

    When an EMI condition is present, the overvoltage conditioner will conduct the voltage to the DC spark gap where the path to ground is resistive in nature. This will cause a moderate voltage increase and when the voltage level reaches the single trigger breakdown voltage of the thyristor, it will be triggered, thus preserving the input spike form voltage.
