Rectifier diodes are a type of diode which are used to convert alternating current (AC) to direct current (DC). A bridge rectifier is a specific arrangement of four diodes in a bridge circuit configuration which forms a full-wave rectifier that makes use of both halves of the input AC wave form. One of the most popular bridge rectifiers is the W08G/1.

The W08G/1 bridge rectifier is a single-phase, silicon-based, full-wave rectifier which has four diodes connected in a star configuration, forming the familiar bridge shape. Its four pins - an anode, cathode, and two leads - enable it to be connected to any circuit requiring DC. This bridge rectifier is usually specified to handle a corresponding maximum peak reverse voltage (VPRV) of 800V, with maximum average forward current (IF(AV)) of 10 Amps, hence the name W08G/1.

In a typical application circuit, the W08G/1 bridge rectifier can either be connected in a voltage doubler or voltage bridging configurations. In the voltage doubler configuration, two series capacitors are connected in parallel to the bridge, resulting in a sinusoidal AC waveform being rectified into a two pulse DC wave form. The voltage doubler (VD) configuration doubles the peak output voltage of the system with respect to the peak input voltage.

In voltage bridging (VBR) configurations, the bridge rectifier is directly connected to the output terminal, with no capacitors being used. This configuration results in a sinusoidal AC waveform being rectified into a single pulse DC waveform. By connecting the bridge rectifier directly to the output terminal, the peak output voltage of the system is identical to the peak input voltage.

The operation of the W08G/1 bridge rectifier involves two main parts, the AC-DC conversion process and the heat dissipation process. During the AC-DC conversion process, the two input terminals of the bridge receive the AC input and each output terminal is used as both an output and as a current return path. In each complete cycle, the diode bridge is forwarding or reversing a pulse of current that is limited only by the sum of the four individual diode’s limitations. During its operation, the bridge rectifier also generates heat due to its resistive losses, as well as from the heat produced by the individual diodes. Therefore, the bridge rectifier needs to be cooled efficiently in order to prevent it from being damaged or destroyed.

The W08G/1 bridge rectifier is a compact and cost effective device, making it a popular choice among engineers and designers. Although it is designed to handle 800V peak reverse voltage and 10 Amps average forward current, it can be easily re-arranged to accommodate different power levels by changing the individual diode ratings.
