Through Hole Resistors
The Watt-hour meter (WHM) is an instrument that measures the electrical energy over a certain period of time, i.e., energy consumed or produced, and then displaying these values in Kilowatts-hour (kWh). The device also measures several parameters like KVA, KVAR, current, voltage, even harmonic, power factor, etc. The main function of these devices is to ensure accuracy in electricity billing.
WHMs are used in the power industry to monitor the power consumed by households, public places, factories, institutional bodies, and other establishments. They are connected to the power line that draws power from the utility grid. They can also be used for energy conservation, energy auditing, or branch metering. It is essential for accurate billing for utilities, as it helps to measure the power used by the customers in the required hour interval.
WHM Application Field and Working Principle
WHMs are generally classified into static and digital. Static Watt-hour meters register power consumption in mechanical indicators such as dials, while digital WHMs digitally display the power and use digital numbering for its measurements. Modern models also measure the demand of instantaneous power, of which static models cannot detect. The watt-hour meters consist of a sensing element, a driving mechanism, and an indicating mechanism. The sensing element measures the electric parameters such as the voltage, current, and frequency. Velocity transformers, current transformers, and potential transformers are used in different combinations to measure these parameters. The driving mechanism is usually an electromechanical device that is operated by the flow of electricity, and it drives the indicating mechanism. The indicating mechanism can be either mechanical or digital. In mechanical watt-hour meters, an analogue indicator needle is used to measure parameters which move from one point to another. The read-off is performed by reading off the position of the needle from the scale that corresponds with the parameter. In digital models, the parameters are displayed on a LCD or LED display.
WHMs are one of the important devices used in the electricity utility industry and are now widely used for both commercial and residential use. They are designed to measure electricity consumption over short and long durations of time and also help calculate other power parameters. It helps electricity companies and customers to get a clear picture of power usage and helps them maintain the budget and efficiency.
