Film capacitors, also known as plastic film capacitors, are passive electronic components that consist of two electrodes insulated by polymer film. They are constructed by two metal plates separated by a porous dielectric film. Film capacitors are widely used in a variety of automated control, electrical and electronic equipment in the vehicle, aviation, shipbuilding, military, and other fields, for applications such as single boosting, filtering, AC/DC conversion, and signal transmission.
The WMC08D22K series of film capacitors is one of the most popular products within this product type. It is constructed of metalized film and has a wide range of capacity. It is a non-polarized capacitance that has a temperature coefficient of less than + 350PPM/°C (see graph below). The WMC08D22K is built with a durable, non-magnetic housing which is resistant to shock, vibration and EMI interference. It is also rated for Low ESR and low ESR resistance at high frequencies.

As for its working principle, film capacitors work on the same principle as all other capacitors. An electric current is applied to the capacitor plates, which creates an electric field resulting in a static electric charge being stored in the dielectric film which lies between the two plates. This charge is then released when the current is removed from the plates. The WMC08D22K specifically works by taking advantage of the high efficiency of the film dielectric’s resistance to leakage, allowing for a high capacity to be stored in a smaller space.
