Film capacitors (also known as film dielectric capacitors) are a diverse family of capacitor types that use a thin film as the dielectric material and substrates of very thin plastic film or paper, with a metal (usually aluminum) layer deposited on it. Film capacitors have been used for decades and are generally considered reliable and safe. They are used in a wide range of applications such as power supplies, electronic circuits, signal processing, instrumentation, aerospace, and medical equipment.

WMC2P22K is a particular type of film capacitor developed by the KEMET Corporation. The WMC2P22K film capacitor is a long life, high performance part, designed to meet the most demanding applications. It is a single-ended, through-hole in a 2212 case size with a two-lead construction and a 0204 terminal style. The WMC2P22K is designed for use in high temperature (160°C) and high frequency (100 kHz) applications.

The WMC2P22K film capacitor offers superior performance in comparison to other film capacitors due to its advanced design. It features a non-inductance design with very low ESR allowing for wide capacitance range from 0.1uF to 1uF and long life. The capacitor also offers excellent transient voltage response, improved high-frequency stability and excellent high-temperature performance. The WMC2P22K also features an extended frequency range of up to 300kHz, allowing for higher operating frequencies and better transient response.

The WMC2P22K works by using an electric field to store electrical energy in the dielectric medium between its two conductors. When a voltage source is connected across its terminals, the electric field causes the capacitance of the capacitor to increase and store energy. The voltage across the capacitor is determined by the ratio of the capacitance and electric field produced by the applied voltage source. Thus, the capacitance of a capacitor can be changed by the application of alternating or direct voltage.

The WMC2P22K film capacitor is ideal for applications requiring high performance in high voltage, high frequency and high temperature environments such as switching power supplies, high speed clock circuits, impulse generators, and other high voltage/high frequency applications.
