Optical sensors detect light, illumination and, respectively, darkness. Being used for both industrial and commercial automation, they infer the end-of-travel switching applications and, hence, the presence or absence of objects. The WTB27-3P3711 photoelectric sensor, part of the WTB series presented by the ABB industrial automation supplier, is specifically designed and optimized for automated industrial control.

Application Field and Working Principle
The WTB27-3P3711 is mainly used in applications where a precise timing is required in switching devices when an object is detected. Its main area of application is on automated, industrial machines, such as conveyors, hoists, sorters, picking systems, assembly lines, etc.
The WTB27-3P3711 is a simple photoelectric sensor based on retro-reflective technology. It is equipped with an emitter diode that sends a visible light in the red wavelength (with the help of a multi-chip LED) and a separate receiver diode that detects the reflected light. It can detect objects that have a minimum reflectivity of 5%, including glass, metal, plastic, etc.
The sensor can be set to function in four modes: NPN normally open, PNP normally open, NPN normally closed and PNP normally closed. The switching operation is controlled by the Teach-In function, which allows the user to set the desired switching point. Depending on the mode, when the object is detected the switching signal is either turned on or off.
