The X3C30F1-20S is an RF directional coupler in the application field. It is typically used to measure and control the power levels of in-line signal transmission. The X3C30F1-20S is designed to be low loss, highly accurate, and easily installed.

A directional coupler is an apparatus/device used in radio systems to measure/couple the power of signals moving either in the forward or reverse directions with respect to the device itself. It can also be used to “sample” the power levels of RF signals at any given point in an RF system without making any connections to the internal circuitry in the system, and without disrupting the signal. A directional coupler consists of four main elements; two decoupling windings or inductors, a detection winding, and two coupling windings.

The two decoupling windings/inductors are in series with the center conductor of the signal path. In reverse mode, the two decoupling windings/inductors are acting in inverse phase-angles. When a forward-wave signal moves along the signal path, the two decoupling windings/inductors experience a voltage drop, creating a small amount of power loss, and this energy is used to charge up the detection winding. The detection winding is two windings in series with eachother, typically wound in a toroidal shape with a core inside it. The winding generate an induced voltage related to the forward-wave signal, and this voltage is read as a voltage across the two coupling windings (on the outside of the toroid).

The two coupling windings are connected linearly, such that the voltage induced in the detection winding due to the forward wave is transmitted to the coupling windings. The coupled voltage can then be read as a measure of the power of the forward wave, without making any actual physical connection to the cable. As the same magnetic field that feeds the detection winding also couples to the coupling windings, they both have identical voltage induced in them. This means that the coupling windings can be used to also sample the power of the reverse wave.

For example, in condition monitoring it can be used to measure and control the functional integrity of components in a long-distance communication system.
