The coupled voltage can then be read as a measure of the power of the forward wave, without making any actual physical connection to the cable. As the same magnetic field that feeds the detection winding also couples to the coupling windings, they both have identical voltage induced in them. This means that the coupling windings can be used to also sample the power of the reverse wave.
