This electrical connection cuts off any current flow through the switch and will no longer let the electricity flow from VIN to VOUT. When the PWM signal is low, the switch is OFF, energy will be stored in the inductor, otherwise, when the PWM signal goes high the power switch is ON, energy will be discharged from the inductor to the output capacitor. The voltage can now be step down or step up according to the input and output parameters.
