The XR81102-F is a family of high performance, low cost clock generators, PLLs and frequency synthesizers designed for a wide variety of applications. The innovative design of the XR81102-F enables cost effective solutions for the more complex frequency synthesizers required for various embedded applications. This application note provides an overview of the XR81102-F design and describes its application field and working principle.

Clock/Timing – Clock generators, PLLs, Frequency Synthesizers are all used to synthesize a wide variety of frequencies and provide solutions for high-speed and low-power operation in digital and mixed-signal applications. The XR81102-F provides a cost effective solution plus the high performance desired throughout the entire design process. It meets the needs of many applications ranging from medical equipment, industrial control equipment, automotive systems, military and aerospace systems, telecommunications, to consumer electronics.

The XR81102-F is based on a sophisticated architecture to achieve the best possible performance. It uses a master clock operating at 64 MHz to generate a cycle-accurate, half-cycle accurate and quarter-cycle accurate clock frequencies that are free from jitter. The cycle-accurate frequencies are divided and output by four PLLs. The cycle-accurate clocks can also be phase-shifted based on the phase increment, phase shift, and hold bits.

The XR81102-F employs a unique method of generating a wide range of frequencies. It consists of four programmable PLLs (Phase Lock Loops) with a programmable feedback tap that varies the output frequency. The four PLLs can be used in parallel or in series to generate a variety of frequencies from 400 kHz to 200 MHz. This feature enables the device to generate a wide range of frequency combinations from 25 kHz to 200 MHz from a single device.

The XR81102-F also features frequency doubling and quadrature outputs for better jitter performance. The frequency multiplying capability supports output frequencies up to 400 MHz, making it suitable for the clock requirements of modern applications such as high-speed ethernet, DDR2, DDR3, and GPON. The quadrature outputs reduce jitter and minimize noise to ensure accuracy and reliability of the generated clock signals.

In addition, the XR81102-F includes a power management mode which allows the device to be powered down and still maintain the master clock running. This feature allows the device to enter a low power state while running low-speed applications.

The XR81102-F is packaged in a small 16-pin TSSOP and is designed to work in a wide range of temperatures from -40℈C to + 70℈C. This makes the device suitable for automotive, military and aerospace applications, as well as for other applications with stringent environmental requirements.
