Snap action, limit switches are basically a type of switch that operates mechanically, by snap action and the movement of an actuator pin located at some pre-determined length. Snap action limit switches are either single pole double-throw (SPDT) or single pole single-throw (SPST) switches. The Z-15HS-B (Hazardous Location SPDT Switch, Side Act. & Mom.) is a general purpose snap action limit switch with a durable design, suitable for a wide range of applications.

The Z-15HS-B switch is designed for applications within hazardous locations. It is built with a hermetically sealed housing, fully encapsulated for additional protection, increasing the resistance to solvents, dust, moisture, oil and of course hazardous-rated atmospheres. This switch is designed for side actuation, with a roller lever made from stainless steel or Delrin; providing good mechanical guidance for an even and consistent switch response. It has a current rating of 10A at 250 VAC (with 180°C rated wire) and is also approved for IEC contactors and couplings. It has a dielectric strength of 2,750 VAC. The options include a single or dual switch action (which are both independently adjustable), and either a stainless steel or Delrin roller lever.

The Z-15HS-B includes a wide range of other features and options allowing the user to customize it to their exact needs. It is UL listed and certified, and includes a captive actuator and mounting bracket. Furthermore, the switch is rated IP 67 IK08, offering high protection against dust, moisture and dirt; making it suitable for harsh and corrosive environments. The operating temperature range is -20°C to +120°C and it has a mechanical life of up to 2 million cycles. The Z-15HS-B also comes with a choice of three actuator heights (1.19, 1.58 or 2.27 mm), to allow fine adjustment for optimum switch response.

The working principle of the Z-15HS-B is fairly straightforward. The actuator pin is pushed on by either the stainless steel or Delrin roller lever. Once the actuator pin reaches a pre-determined length, the contacts close, completing the circuit. This allows the switch to act as either a single pole double-throw (SPDT) or single pole single-throw (SPST) switch, depending on the configuration chosen.
