Common Mode Chokes
The Z21 application field and working principle is closely related to common mode chokes, which are used to stop electromagnetic interference. A common mode choke is a type of passive device used to reduce electromagnetic interference, or EMI, and radio-frequency interference, or RFI. These chokes are often used in power supply lines, coaxial cables, and audio/video cables, where voltage ripple can cause distortion of a signal or even switching noise. When multiple conductors pass through a common mode choke, the EMI and RFI noise will be suppressed due to the induced common mode voltages. This type of device, commonly known as a ground loop isolator, uses inductance in the presence of a flux field to reduce the electrical coupling of two physical terminals. Essentially, a common mode choke works by creating a linear inductance between two or more conductor lines. A common mode choke is also known as a common mode impedance, Com Mode Choke, or differential filter. This type of choke is typically used in AC power supplies, telecommunications, and other electronic circuits where electrical noise can be a problem. In the case of a 20 Amp AC power supply, the noise levels can be decreased to an acceptable level by adding a choke filter on the power line. By connecting two wires together and forming a circuit with an inductor, the currents in the two wires will remain equal while the voltage differences between them will be reduced. This reduces the electrical fields that are generated when the power lines are energized. The Z21 application field and working principle are based on the same principle. When an applied DC voltage is applied across the common mode choke, the output voltage and current will be reduced. The magnitude of the voltage reduction depends upon the impedance of the common mode choke. The higher the impedance, the greater the reduction in the voltage and current. This voltage reduction results in a reduction in the power dissipated across the common mode choke. The amount of voltage reduction will depend on the differences between the resistance, capacitance, and inductance of the common mode choke. Common mode chokes are also used for suppressing unwanted noise. By introducing an inductance on both sides of a circuit, current flowing in one conductor is reduced while current flowing in the other conductor is increased. This reduces the noise level that is generated in the circuit. Also, by adding an inductor across a power line, the voltage ripple can be reduced. This type of design is especially useful in audio and video cables, where EMI and RFI noise can be significantly reduced.Common mode chokes are an important component of a wide range of electrical and electronic devices.
