Ferrite Cores have been used to provide shielding from EMI in cables and wires for decades. The most common, and perhaps the most widely used type, are the ZCAT13D Cores.

The ZCAT13D Core is a small toroid with an internal diameter of 0.5-in and an outer diameter of 0.77-in. It is constructed from a high grade ferrite to provide both a high impedance and wide frequency range when used with the appropriate connectors. It has a high pull-off strength, making it an ideal device for shielding applications in which the cable or wire needs to be disconnected. It can also be used in applications that require EMI shielding from mountable sources, such as an accessory resistors, and in applications where a full wrap-around or sleeved toroid is impractical.

The ZCAT13D Cores provide good electrical isolation when wrapped around a conductor, providing ten times the common mode noise reduction of comparable designs. The wrapping process, to achieve the desired noise reduction, should follow the suggested installation instructions to ensure proper shielding. The torque on each core should be limited and the current should be limited to the maximum specification.

The working principle of the ZCAT13D is based on the ferromagnetic principle, i.e. it has a special property to attract other objects which are made of ferromagnetic material. The core is made of a high-grade ferrite, allowing it to acquire an external signal when an alternating electrical current is applied to it. The magnetic field that is created by the alternating current induces an additional current in the core, which is referred to as the Eddy current, which creates the desired magnetic properties that can be used to provide shielding.

The ZCAT13D Cores are ideal for use in a variety of applications, from EMI shielding cables and wires to providing EMI shielding from appliances and device housings.
