The 1N6036A TVS diode is an important tool used for mitigating surges that can endanger sensitive electronic components such as microprocessors. This device is used in many applications such as aerospace, medical, automotive, and communication systems. Additionally, this unidirectional diode is usually composed of a reverse-biased Schottky diode, a trigger diode, and a spark-gap. This multilayered structure provides a strong ESD protection to the system, while allowing for a low capacitance to ensure component protection.
The 1N6036A TVS diode, once triggered, rapidly clamps surges coming in from its anode side to a safe level. Much of the power responsible for these surges is dissipated as heat. Alternatively, the cathode side of the device serves as an impedance to voltage spikes, helping reduce the amplitude of transient voltage to a safe level. While three models of the diode exist with three different hold-current ratings (500mA, 2A, and 4A), all of them are constructed with a common feature--an electrostatic discharge (ESD) protection up to 10kV contact discharge.
Furthermore, its functionality is based on the principle of avalanche breakdown. During normal operation, a small voltage, a few milli volts (mV), is applied across the diode that is insufficient to achieve the breakdown point. When a surge, such as a lightning strike or switching surge, reaches the breakdown voltage, the diode enters avalanche breakdown. This is a process where the small mV voltage is suddenly boosted to tens of volts, allowing for a large surge current to flow freely and quickly across the diode. This current is directed away from the electronic component and is dissipated as heat.
In order to control the avalanche breakdown and clamping of voltage surge, the 1N6036A TVS diode is connected in parallel with the protected component in the system. This arrangement allows the diode to respond quickly while preventing secondary damage or destruction to the component. In terms of its physical design, the device is encased in a SOD-323 package--a small and compact form factor ideal for use in space-constrained applications. For due consideration of dissipating the heat generated by the diode, thermal design is required for proper operation.
