1N6002B Application Field and Working Principle

In the electronics world, diodes are an integral part of circuitry and devices. 1N6002B is one such diode, but it is special in terms of its application and working principle. It is a single Zener diode, meaning that when connected correctly in a circuit, it will not act as a conventional diode, but instead as a Zener diode which is specified by its breakdown voltage.

Application Field

The primary application field of this diode is as a voltage regulator. It serves to regulate the input voltage of a circuit so that a desired output voltage is set and maintained. Due to its small size and low power dissipation, it is best suited for low power and low voltage applications such as for battery operated circuits.

Working Principle

When a correct bias voltage is applied across the diode, current will flow in the forward direction. But when the voltage applied is higher than its listed Zener breakdown voltage (Vz), a Zener breakdown occurs. At this point, a large amount of current starts to flow in the reverse direction and the diode acts as a voltage regulator. This means the voltage across the diode is maintained at the specified breakdown voltage.

When the input voltage increases further, the current flowing through the diode increases as well. However, the voltage drop across the diode stays at Vz. This ensures that the current used to regulate the output voltage does not exceed the maximum rated current of the diode. If the current of the diode were to exceed its maximum rating, it would fail and no voltage regulation would occur.

Conclusion
