The MINI54ZAN is a highly integrated 8-bit micro-controller built on a high performance CMOS process technology with low power consumption. It is a part of a series of ultra-low power MCUs from NXP Semiconductors, featuring dual low voltage operation. The MINI54ZAN is a highly cost-effective, yet powerful, solution for applications in consumer, automotive, medical, industrial or other markets requiring an ultra-low power micro-controller.
The MINI54ZAN is capable of executing up to 8 Million Instructions Per Second (MIPS) and it has an on-chip integrated Random Access Memory (RAM), program memory, Timer and Peripherals. It also features an embedded 8051 core with a 5-stage pipeline and the latest 8051-based instructions. The MINI54ZAN also supports a wide range of peripherals like Power Management Units, Watchdog Timers, Multi-object Detectors, Serial Ports, Interfaces, and ADC/ DACs.
The MINI54ZAN application field includes automation, instrumentation, consumer surveillance, audio/video entertainment, small office/home office, Internet of things (IoT), telecommunication and various industrial applications. It is especially beneficial for automotive, medical and consumer products where low-power consumption is necessary for device longevity.
The MINI54ZAN executes an instruction set which is optimized for code size. It supports up to 4K bytes of on-chip program memory and includes an 8-stage instruction prefetch, which allows for fast access to instruction memory. The MINI54ZAN also provides an 8K-byte on-chip RAM which consists of three 64-byte register banks, two 128-byte register banks, and two 256-byte register banks.
The power management of the MINI54ZAN is based on ultra-low power implicit clock gating. This technique reduces active power consumption by disabling unused modules when they are not in use. This feature is essential in automotive and medical applications, where an ultra-low power micro-controller is critical.
The MINI54ZAN supports several external interrupt sources for user application interactions. Moreover, the MCU provides up to five timers for system timing, pulse width modulation and event counting operations. It also provides two high-speed I/O ports, four 8-bit A/D converters with 8 single-ended inputs and 8-bit D/A converters.
The MINI54ZAN working principle is based on a modified Harvard architecture which enables fetching of instructions and data from the same memory banks simultaneously. In this architecture, the program memory is divided into two segments, with the instruction fetch taking place from one segment and data fetch from the other. This way, instructions and data can be fetched simultaneously, allowing the processor to access program and data in parallel.
The MINI54ZAN also features an integrated external oscillator that uses an external crystal as its main clock source. The frequency range is from 10KHz to 26MHz, allowing for a wide range of applications. Additionally, the MCU includes a power monitor, watchdog timer, random number generator, and other functional blocks for efficient power management and trouble-free operation.
