Temperature Sensors - NTC ThermistorsNTC thermistors, also known as negative temperature coefficient thermistors, are temperature sensors incorporated into a variety of electronic devices and applications. Although they come in a variety of shapes and sizes, all types of NTC thermistors use a special semiconductor material with a negative temperature coefficient, which means that the material\'s electrical resistance decreases as its temperature rises. The most common type of NTC thermistor is the disc type, made with a ceramic material coated in a protective coating and featuring two or three metal leads. NTC thermistors use the material\'s thermally dependent resistance to measure temperatures in the range of -80°C to +130°C.The main application field of NTC thermistors is temperature adjustment and control. They are commonly used in industrial equipment, including temperature regulation of air conditioning systems, medical equipment, and automotive engine control. In such applications, the thermistor is located in a feedback circuit so that when the temperature it is exposed to becomes higher than a certainvalue, it induces a signal which is then sent to a switch or a regulator, which adjusts the temperature accordingly.NTC thermistors can also be used as current and voltage measurement devices. By applying a particular voltage or current to an NTC thermistor, its resistance can be measured and converted into a temperature reading. The thermistor\'s resistance can also be used as a reference voltage for an active voltage regulator in order to produce a stable voltage.NTC thermistors are also popularly used as fault indicators in consumer electronics. In this application, the thermistor is inserted in a voltage-regulating circuit of an electronic circuit so that when an overvoltage occurs, it causes the resistance of the thermistor to decrease, tripping the device\'s circuit breaker and rendering it temporarily useless. This feature helps prevent electrical damage caused by excessive current.The working principle of NTC thermistors is that their resistance to the flow of electric current decreases with increasing temperature. This allows them to be used as temperature sensors by measuring the resistance of the thermistor and then converting it to a temperature reading. This is made possible by using the law of thermalswhich states that when two materials with different resistances to a flow of electric current are at different temperatures, the resistance of the material with the lower temperature will be lower. NTC thermistors are usually tuned so that their resistance curve follows a particular temperature range.At higher temperatures, the resistance of an NTC thermistor decreases exponentially. This is why most thermistors are made with ceramic materials, since they offer a much more broader temperature range than other materials. This property makes them suitable for temperature-sensing applications where accurate temperature readings are required. NTC thermistors are ideal for use in temperature-sensing circuits that require precise temperature control. They are also commonly used in motor control, voltage and current measurement, and fault detection applications. Their small size and robust construction make them an ideal choice for use in small and enclosed electronic equipment, as well as automotive and medical applications.
