If a voltage is applied to the gate terminal, the PN junction between the base and collector forms a reversely biased diode. This prevents the current from entering into the collector and cuts off the flow of current from the emitter. In the normally closed state, the current does not flow in either direction, thus the IGBT acts as an open switch.The IGBT also allows the user to control the amount of current flowing in either direction.
