Jumper Wires

Jumper wires are predominantly used for prototyping applications in the field of electronics. They are used as a conduit between different components in a circuit to connect them with each other. Jumper wires are generally formed by thin or thick copper wires that have been insulated with a protective coating. This insulation is often made of plastic, vinyl, or rubber. The insulation helps ensure safety by preventing electrical contact with anything else and reduces possibilities of a short circuit. In addition to this protective layer, some jumper wires are also manufactured with a jacket which provides additional protection from mechanical hazards and provides a personal grip for easy handling.

A big advantage of using jumper wires is that they eliminate the need for soldering. This way, items that need to be connected can be easily and quickly connected without the use of additional tools. This makes jumper wires a great choice for prototyping and tinkering applications. Further, depending on the application, different lengths and sizes of jumper wire can be used. Longer-length wires can be used for connecting components located farther away from each other while thicker wires can be used with higher voltage. Jumper wires are also quite easy to incorporate, as they can be added onto a breadboard’s terminal block conveniently.

Pre-Crimped Leads

Pre-crimped leads are a type of jumper wire composed of a connector, such as a terminal block, and copper wire. Pre-crimped leads require soldering, but offer more reliability and a higher level of consistency than jumper wires. This is because a connector is integrated into the lead, which makes it much more secure. Additionally, because pre-crimped leads are crimped onto the connector, a much lower electrical resistance is offered, increasing the efficiency of the connections being made. This is especially true when compared to regular jumper cables, where the electrical connection between the two points may not be strong enough to support the current being passed through them.

Pre-crimped leads come in several sizes, depending on the application it is being used in. Most often, they are available in 12- to 24-gauge wire size, with the common choices being either 16- or 20AWG (American Wire Gauge). Additionally, different connector types can be used such as insulated, naked, or shielded. Using the right connector type ensures that the connection is safe and reliable. Moreover, the same pre-crimped leads can be used with multiple applications and give the same performance, making them an ideal choice for cost-effective mass production.
