USB, DVI, and HDMI are three popular types of connectors that are used worldwide in electronic applications and equipment. Each has its own purpose within the applications that they are used for and to understand the application field and working principle of each type one needs to have a look at each individually.
USB Connectors
USB stands for Universal Serial Bus and is a prevalent standard for connections between computers and external devices. It comes in numerous shapes and sizes and has a much better speed and functionality capacity over its predecessors such as serial and parallel ports. By using USB, a user can easily connect multiple external devices such as storage drives, printers, scanners, mice, and keyboards on one computer.
A USB connector is composed of four contact pins that allow for both data and power transmission over a single cable. When the device is connected to a computer, four pins are inserted into the USB port and locked into place. This allows the device to receive power and data from the computer simultaneously.
The connector also allows for easy configuration of the connected device by applying a set of software drivers. This means that the device can be set-up for all its functionalities, through any device connected to the USB port.
DVI Connectors
DVI stands for Digital Visual Interface and was primarily developed for linking digital devices to display screens and monitors. DVI comes in various types, namely, DVI-A, DVI-D, and DVI-I. Of these, DVI-D is the most commonly used as it offers support for digital signals only.
A DVI connector generally has 24 pins for carrying digital signals from the source device, such as a DVD player, to the display. The pins are arranged in three rows of 8 pins, where each row is dedicated to a specific purpose. The first row is for the RGB signals, which determine the color of the displayed image; the second row is for the synchronization signals; and the third row is for power supply.
In addition to the pins, DVI also contains four more terminals that are utilized for supporting analog signals on compatible devices. These are labeled in a standard DVI-I connector as one pin for red, one for green, one for blue, and a clock pin.
HDMI Connectors
High-Definition Multimedia Interface (HDMI) is the latest audio-visual interface technology that is rapidly replacing the traditional analog ports in devices such as cameras, DVD players, and TVs. An HDMI connector is composed of 19 pins in three rows, each row designed for a different purpose.
The top row contains 8 pins that carry the audio signals from the source device to the receiving device. The second row contains 8 pins that are designated for carrying the digital video signals from the transmitting device to the receiving device. The third row contains 3 pins for the power supply.
In addition to the pins, an HDMI connector contains two additional terminals for providing the common ground signals. These terminals are positioned between the rows, and are designed to make sure that the signals on the same line maintain a distinct flow away from each other.
