The backplanes they attach to may be in the form of separate boards, or may be part of a midplane pcb arrangement. Racks in this form-factor are typically used in applications such as industrial computing, telecom, medical equipment and storage. The DIN 41612 backplane connector consists of a connector body, with several rows of contacts positioned along the longitudinal axis of the connector body. The contacts are arranged into sets of parallel insulation displacement contacts (IDCs), that enable secure and reliable connections to be made quickly and easily, without the need for soldering or other specialist techniques.The contact IDCs incorporate either solderbuckles or a card contact form to enable the connection of board-level circuits. To ensure reliable connectivity, contact mating and wear-out features are built into the system. The connector bodies are typically made from a die-cast material which is both resilient to withstand high temperatures and vibration, whilst also meeting the required electrical, mechanical, and environmental requirements of the application.Manufacturing Process
The connector body of the DIN 41612 backplane is typically manufactured using a process known as diecasting. This is a permanent-molding process that involves the use of multiple dies and allows for an increased level of accuracy and detail to be produced in the component. Using this manufacturing process, the connector is created by pouring molten metal into a multi-cavity mould and then allowing it to cool and solidify.The IDCs used in the connector typically consist of either a \'card\' contact form, or a \'solderbuckle\' contact form. The card contact form is a flat metal contact that is soldered to the board by a single solder joint point. The solderbuckle contact form is a bent metal contact that forms a loop.
