PTC Resettable Fuses Application Field and Working Principle
PTC Resettable Fuses are electronic fuses with polymeric positive temperature coefficient (PPTC) that consists of polymeric materials such as polypropylene, polyethylene, or polystyrene. These fuses are designed to prevent dangerous overcurrent conditions in electrical and electronic circuits.Typically, a PTC Resettable Fuse consists of a thermally sensitive element connected to two metal electrodes. The current passing through the appliance divides between the electrode and the thermally sensitive element. When the current is within the normal range, the sense element remains close and current flows freely through the circuit. When the current exceeds the limit for normal operation, the sense element opens or increases its resistance to prevent further increase in the current.The most common application for PTC Resettable Fuses is in low voltage applications, such as laptop and notebook computer power supplies, power adapters and adapters for portable mobile phones. It is also used in chargers for digital cameras, cell phones, and other portable electronic devices. PTC Resettable Fuses are widely used in the automotive industry, consumer electronics, telecommunications, and electrical power distribution industries.The working principle of PTC Resettable Fuses is based on the fact that the resistance of its thermal sensing element increases as the temperature of the element increases. When the temperature reaches a certain threshold value, the thermal sensing element will open; this is known as the trip point. Once the trip point occurs, the current flow through the fuse will be limited. If the load or circuit fault continues to feed the fuse with excessive current, the heat generated by the device will continue to rise until the current flow reaches zero, at which point a protective insulation layer forms on the fuse.Under normal operating conditions, the resistance of the PTC element decreases when the temperature drops, and this causes an electric arc to form that will reset the fuse. The arc current will travel back through the sense element, actually resetting the device and allowing current to flow again. As the current flowing through the device decreases, the thermal sensing element returns to its normal resistance value.When overloaded or short circuited, some models of PTC Resettable Fuses will function normally, reducing the risk of fire, electrical shock and property damage, and typically also protecting against further excessive current. They are also ideal in situations where a quick reset is necessary, such as when a component is used in a rapid reset application.In summary, PTC Resettable Fuses provide protection from over currents and also allow for a quick reset when needed.
