TVS (transient voltage suppression) diodes are used to protect circuit components from overvoltage incidents caused by electrostatic discharges (ESDs) or circuit malfunctions. As an avalanche diode, the 1.5KE33CA-B has an extremely low current clamping capability and a very fast response time to transient voltages, giving it an excellent ESD protection level.

The 1.5KE33CA-B device can be used in both DC and AC applications. In DC applications, the diode acts as a two-terminal device with one terminal connected to the power source and the other to the device that needs to be protected. When a DC voltage is applied to the diode, it acts as a voltage clamp, limiting the voltage across the terminal to the clamping voltage level. In AC applications, the diode acts as a four-terminal device with two terminals connected to the power source and two connected to the device that needs to be protected. When an AC voltage is applied across the diode, it acts as a capacitance, storing energy during the positive portion of the voltage waveform while discharging that energy during the negative portion of the waveform, again limiting the voltage across the terminal to the clamping voltage level.
