Terminal Blocks - Accessories
Terminal blocks are electromechanical components designed to provide simple and cost-effective electrical connections. They are comprised of several parts, such as posts, screws, and jumpers, and are used to connect and secure two or more electrical wires or conductors together at a safe current. Terminal blocks are most often used in industrial, commercial and residential applications.
The function of terminal blocks is to connect and rigorously secure multiple wires in place for a continual flow of electrical current between two points. They provide separation between high and low current or voltage points when needed. Terminal blocks are designed to be both safe and efficient for connecting and/or disconnecting wires from a location without having to cut or replace them. As such, they are ideal for a variety of aviation, marine, and automotive applications.
Terminal blocks come in both single and multiple line configurations, and are available in various sizes and ratings. Typically, the higher the rating of a terminal block, the larger the block, and the more its weight capacity. A 10.5 Amp rating terminal block, for example, typically weighs about 950g and can accommodate two 18A electrical current flows. Terminal blocks are usually protected by metal casings, which guard against accidental contact with their live or energized components.
The working principle of terminal blocks is simple. When a terminal block is energized, the current flows in one direction through an insulated conductor. When the conductor is connected to a terminal base, a connection is made between the two terminals, which allow the current to flow into the other terminal. The current then passes through a jumper or wire, and continues to flow until the conductor is disconnected. The current can either be a direct current, or an alternating current (AC).
Terminal blocks are typically used in a variety of applications, including residential wiring systems, industrial control systems, computers, and electrical maintenance. They are also commonly used to connect and secure multiple wires in commercial and industrial wiring systems, for example, in the rigging of clocks, elevator motors, and security systems. Additionally, they are used to connect electricity supply lines to panel board, to join heavy-duty cables, and even for the connection of the ground line of an electrical system.
Terminal blocks offer several benefits, including the capability to securely repeat or change a wiring connection quickly, the reductive use of wires, and the breakability of wiring configurations. These benefits make terminal blocks a preferred solution for applications requiring short-term connection of electrical wires, or for applications requiring frequent rewiring. As such, terminal blocks are essential components for industrial maintenance applications and operations.
Although terminal blocks have been around for some time, they have evolved to become an even more popular solution for a variety of electrical connection requirements. With the availability of different sizes, assemblies, and ratings, and the ability to reduce wiring costs when using multi-line configurations, terminal blocks offer an excellent solution for a wide range of applications, from residential to commercial and industrial uses.
