Fuses have been part of electrical engineering for over a century and are an essential safety device, protecting people and property from potential fire hazards caused by over-currents in circuits. From early days fuse were manually operated, with various designs such as cup and cone, bolted, and cut out. The technologies for fuse have evolved over the years, with many advances in materials, design, and operation. Today, the market offers an extensive range of fuses, from the 5A-rated consumer fuse through to the large current-carrying fuses of the utility power grid. The 11015 is one type of fuse designed to provide reliable protection under high current overload situations.
The 11015 fuse is a high-current-rated device of dual-element construction, rated up to 1000A and typically used in applications ranging from distribution transformers to motor circuits. This type of fuse is a modern design which combines a fast-acting ceramic element with a time-delay ferrule element and an integral load element. The fast-acting ceramic element is designed to blow instantly in the event of any momentary overloads, providing instantaneous protection to circuitry and personnel. The time-delay ferrule element is designed to remain operational during overloads, providing full-time protection against excessive current. The integrated load element helps reduce power supply transmission loss.
Electrical design engineers must pay particular attention to two important safety features when choosing fuses for installations. The first of these is over-load protection, which is the primary purpose of any fuse. It is essential that the fuse is correctly rated so that it will open the circuit in the event of a high-current overload, while still allowing enough current to pass through the circuit to meet the required load. The second feature is the fault current rating, which is the maximum current that a fuse can safely withstand in the event of a short-circuit. The 11015 is specifically designed to meet both these requirements, providing high-precision fault current ratings which can permit higher current to pass through the fuse during fault conditions, thus reducing the risk of secondary damage due to excessive thermal overload.
The working principle of the 11015 fuse is based on the use of a melting element mounted inside. During time delay mid-level overloads, the temperature gradient within the element causes the fuse to heat up, weakening the air gap forming the fuse link. Upon the completion of a high-current overload, the air gap is melted and the current carrying conductor is opened, instantly decoupling the circuit from all current.
This type of fuse has become a popular and efficient choice for installation engineers. They are highly reliable and the improved fault current ratings provide enhanced over-current protection and reduced fire risks. They are also widely available in the market, offered as offering complete fuse systems that combine an adjustable adaptor and a fuse linked to a terminal, allowing the customer to swap the terminal for a faster load or a lower impedance cable, thus creating a customized system for each application. In addition, they are offered in various sizes, mounting configurations and voltage/current ratings, making them suitable for a broad range of applications.
