Circular cable assemblies are harnesses that contain an electrical connector that can be snapped into or screwed onto a mating surface or device. These assemblies are useful for interconnecting and passing electrical signals between two devices when the cables are short and the connector should remain in place in order to securely fasten the connection. Circular cable assemblies contain one or more insulated wires with crimped terminals and pins in order to ensure a proper connection. They also can contain two or more wires depending on the type of assembly. The most common types of circular cable assemblies are RJ45, RJ11, RJ12, Cat5, and DVI.

All use the modular 8P8C (eight position, eight contact) style of connectors which do not require tools for installation. The Cat5 assemblies have RJ45 connectors as well as the 8P8C connectors. The RJ12 and RJ11 assemblies feature 6P6C (six position, six contact) connectors. The 8P8C connectors are superior to 6P6C connectors because they can provide a higher data rate.
DVI assemblies feature a large, rectangular plug with pins that fit into female sockets on a compatible device. DVI cables are digital visual interface cables, which transfers a digital signal between video sources like a DVD player, LCD monitor or flat screen television. Some DVI cables also come with an audio cable connection built in.
As far as working principle is concerned, there is an electrical conductor like copper or aluminum, an insulating material, and a shielding material. For twisted pair cable assemblies, the copper wire is twisted together in order to reduce the chances of signal interference. The insulation will prevent the electrical current from flowing directly from one wire to another. Shielding will serve to protect the inner wires from outside interference and will also provide strength and structure to the cable assembly.
In conclusion, circular cable assemblies provide reliable and safe connections between two or more electrical devices. The use and working principles depending on the type of assembly. Twisted pair shielded cables are best for eliminating noise, while coaxial cables are better for higher frequencies and data rates. Additionally, the modular RJ connectors require no additional tools for installation.
