Film Capacitors Film capacitors are composed of one or more organic, metal or ceramic electrical layers, electrodes, and a dielectric medium. The dielectric can either be a vacuum, air, or some form of organically-based film material. The electrodes are made of an electrically-conductive material and insulated with an insulating material such as glass, ceramic, or plastic to prevent electrical energy from leaking across the capacitor. As a DC hold circuit, film capacitors provide much improved ripple-current characteristics when compared to electrolytic capacitors, which results in improved electrical control in motor drives, switching systems and other power-electronics applications.Film capacitors are sensitive to temperature, so they are generally more reliable in small to medium power applications—especially when humidity is a factor. This makes them the ideal choice in large numbers of applications, ranging from aircraft power systems to renewable energy systems.158X224 working principleFilm capacitors operate on the principle of dielectric materials that are sandwiched between two electrically-conductive plates. An electric charge is stored in the capacitor by creating an electric field between the plates. When the external voltage across the plates is positive, a positive charge is stored in one plate, and a negative charge is stored in the other. When the voltage is reversed (approximately every half-cycle), the charges switch. This process creates an oscillating charge that provides an effective capacitance.Film capacitors have a much larger surface area relative to their physical size when compared to other types of capacitors. This increased surface area allows for the use of thinner dielectrics and therefore a higher degree of flexibility for the designer. In some cases, the dielectric can be so thin as to provide excellent insulation with very low ESR, making it suitable for high-frequency applications.In addition to high capacitance, film capacitors also offer high insulation resistance and lower leakage compared to electrolytic designs. This provides several performance benefits, including high voltage rating, wide frequency range, and improved thermal shock and vibration resistance.Film capacitors are highly reliable, efficient, and cost effective.
