158X334 Film Capacitors: Application Field and Working Principle

Film capacitors are polar passive two-terminal electronic components used in many forms of electrical equipment. A film capacitor uses a film dielectric and can be marked with 158X334. They are used in many different applications, due to their various advantages like good stability, lower dc leakage current, good frequency performance, low loss, small size and high ripple current tolerance. As 158X334 film capacitors are more often used, let us have a look at their application field and working principle.

Application Field

1. In Power Supplies:Film capacitors are the best choice when used in power supplies due to their low ESL and ESR, high ripple current handling capability, wide temperature range and long life. They can be used as power filters and output filters in AC to DC converter, DC to DC converters, hot standby and redundant systems, and other AC and DC power supplies.2. In Control Circuitry:Film capacitors offer excellent insulation properties that make them extremely useful for use in control circuits. They can be used in PFC (Power Factor Correction) circuits, AC Motors, EMI/RFI rejectors, variable speed controllers, automatic plant control sequences, dimmers, etc.3. In Instrumentation:Film capacitors offer superior performance for use in instrumentation and test equipment. They can be used in high voltage components, precision analog/digital signal conditioning circuits and samples and hold circuits.4. For Telecommunications:Film capacitors are ideal for use in both residential and commercial communications systems, such as audio/video, high speed data IO links, HDTV and other UPS systems. They can also be used in satellite, microwave and fiber communications systems due to their low ESL and ESR.

Working Principle

The most common film capacitor uses a polyethylene dielectric film. When a voltage is applied across the terminals of the capacitor, an electric field is generated between the electrodes of the capacitor. This electric field changes the shape of the molecules of the polyethylene film, creating an electric polarization in the film. This polarization creates an electrical charge on the electrodes and a potential difference across the capacitor.The current that flows through the film capacitor is known as the “leakage current.” This leakage current is determined by the amount of resistance across the dielectric of the film capacitor. Consequently, the lower the resistance of the dielectric, the lower the leakage current. In order to reduce the leakage current of the film capacitor, the dielectric is chosen with very low loss tangent characteristics.The leakage current of the film capacitors is also affected by the quality of the electrodes as well as the dielectric. The thickness, area and surface quality of the electrodes will affect the quality and performance of the film capacitor, as will any cracking or corrosion of the electrodes.
