Working Principle

The 15KP17C conducts current when it is forward biased above breakdown voltage. When an impulse of voltage is applied, the breakdown voltage is exceeded and the diode quickly becomes conductive. Its high surge capability allows it to quickly clamp the voltage to a safe level, protecting the components from potential damage.

After the applied impulse of voltage is removed, the diode ceases to conduct. This is because the reverse bias current remains very low, allowing the diode voltage to decrease faster than it increases.

A unique feature of this type of diode is its ability to handle high surge currents over a much longer period of time than other diodes. This ensures that the diode can effectively clamp the voltage to its rated value, as the device is able to tolerate a much higher current than a normal diode.
