The 15KP28CA is a Transient Voltage Suppressor (TVS) diode with an unidirectional ceramic material and a low leakage current ideal for protecting circuits against transients. It is regularly used in a variety of applications where the voltage or current in a circuit jumps significantly higher than the usual operating voltage.

 

TVS-diodes similar to the 15KP28CA have many different types of applications. Typical applications for TVS-diodes include surge protection in power supplies, protection of I/O ports such as USB and Firewire, lightning protection of communication lines, overvoltage protection for AC/DC input lines, and protection of flat screen displays. The 15KP28CA in particular is a 28V TVS diode with an 1500W rating suitable for protecting circuits from high voltage transients.

 

TVS-diodes such as the 15KP28CA are designed to act as a passive, unidirectional protection device which will divert damaging transient voltages away from delicate electronic components. When the voltage exceeds the normal operational voltage, the TVS-diode begins to conduct current in the external circuit and is essentially “triggered” to start breakdown and divert current from the device. The TVS-diode will remain in the breakdown state until the voltage drops below a predetermined breakdown voltage. The device is designed to reduce the voltage between its two probes to a safe level, thereby protecting the circuit from destruction.
