TVS (Transient Voltage Suppressor) diodes are electronic components, akin to any other diode, with a more specialized function. Unlike run-of-the-mill diodes, which chiefly carry current in one direction and block current in the opposite direction, TVS diodes also offer superior protection against surges of energy. Application Field

Working Principle

The 15KPA36C is a zener diode with another TVS diode connected to it. The main purpose of the two diodes is to suppress transients. A zener diode works by maintaining a constant voltage across its output even when the input voltage varies. This is because when the input voltage rises too high, the Zener diode starts to conduct current that is in opposite direction of the primary current flow, thus diverting much of the voltage away from the device that is being protected.

On the contrary, the TVS diode simultaneously starts to pass current in the same direction of current flow through its junction when the input voltage rises too high. This helps to protect the protected device from further voltage increase. Overall, the two diodes together helps to protect the device from voltage transients that can render the device inoperable.

Apart from protection against voltage transients, the 15KPA36C diode also ensures power supply switch-on safety. This is because as the input voltage rises too high, the diode will help divert much of the voltage away from the device, by conducting current in opposite directions.
