Terminal Blocks - Headers, Plugs and Sockets

Terminal blocks are components which are generally used in electrical and electronic circuits. These components are used in order to provide short circuit protection, insulation, voltage, current and signal-level connections between terminals and components. In addition to providing protection, they can also be used as a means of communication.  

Terminal blocks are categorized into three main categories: headers, plugs, and sockets. The primary function of these components is to make electrical connections between two points. Headers are generally used to connect two devices together and they are usually the bulkier of the three. Plugs are smaller components which are used to make electrical connections between two points, such as between cable outlets and devices. Finally, sockets are used to connect one device to another.  

Terminal blocks are generally used in a variety of areas, such as industrial and automotive applications. Terminal blocks are regularly used in the process of creating digital-signal-processing (DSP) systems which are used in a variety of applications. Terminal blocks are also used in the hardware and software engineering of computer systems, as well as in applications such as telecommunications, switching, and audio/video systems.  

Terminal blocks are constructed using metal or plastic materials. The conductive contact between the components can be either a screw/nut construction system, or a sockets/wires construction system. The contact area between the two components will depend on the specific application. The type of contact between the components will also depend on various environmental factors such as temperature, vibration, pressure, and humidity.  

The working principle of terminal blocks is relatively straightforward. The contact area is created as a metal or plastic part that is designed to mate with another part when pressed together. The two parts form a mechanical and electrical connection. Electrical current passes through the contact, which provides a stable insulation between the two components.
