Incandescent lamps are one of the oldest forms of electrical illumination, first patented by Thomas Edison in 1879. They consist of a thin tungsten filament contained in a glass envelope (called a bulb) which is evacuated or filled with a gas such as nitrogen, halogen, or krypton. When an electric current passes through the filament, it heats up, producing light. Neon signs use a different type of electrical discharge within a glass tube. Instead of a heated filament, a mixture of gases is used to produce light, either through an electric arc or an electronic discharge. The arc passes between two electrodes at the ends of the tube, creating an intense, colored glow.Both incandescent and neon lighting have a wide range of applications. Incandescent lamps are used mainly for general illumination, task lighting, and residential lighting. They are also often used in overhead projectors and spotlights.
