Barrier terminals are the most used in the industry due to their reliability, compactness, and safety measures for preventing the accidental short-circuiting of wires. Though often overlooked, they play an integral role in any number of tasks, from power distribution, to fuse protection, to grounding. They can be used in a variety of applications, from industrial, to automation, to residential; and in a range of solutions, from wiring harnesses, to busbars, to distribution boxes. From a practical standpoint, the use of terminal blocks increases efficiency and convenience for a range of activities. Their adaptability and design make them perfect for use in a variety of configurations, from PCB-to-cable board, cable-to-cable, and wire-to-wire. Additionally, they are also used to securely link different parts of a circuit or system.In terms of the working principle, terminal blocks are generally designed to be installed by connecting the wires pedantically into the individual terminals and then fastening the wires in place, either manually or with the help of a screw. This stopes the wire from accidentally coming undone and potentially entering into another terminal, leading to a potential short circuit. In more advanced systems, we often find the use of insulation displacement connectors (IDC). These are specialised connectors that make use of a sharp knife-like surface to penetrate the insulation of the wire and provide a secure connection with the other terminals.
