Fiber Optic Connectors
Fiber optic connectors are mainly used to link two optical fiber cables together so that light signals can be transferred between them. The connectors provide a good physical contact between the two cables and ensure that the light signals remain relatively unaffected by any external interference. In most cases, the application of fiber optic connectors is mainly used in two fields: communication and sensing. In communication, they are used to form an optical communication link between two pieces of equipment and are the most common method to terminate optical fibers. In sensing, they are used to sense changes in optical power thanks to their ability to let light pass until a certain power level is reached. Fiber optic connectors usually require the use of specialized tools and process to correctly mount and maintain them. This process is known as termination and usually involves the cutting and splicing of the optical fiber and the use of polishing equipment and epoxy for the mechanical attachment of the connector. The two most common types of fiber optic connectors are the SC and LC connector. The SC stands for Subscriber Connector and consists of a ferrule that holds the fiber and a plastic body which locks it in the ferrule. The LC stands for Lucent Connector and is similar in structure to the SC but they can contain up to 4 fibers instead of the one in the SC connector. The working principle of a fiber optic connector is based on the principles of physics such as Total Internal Reflection (TIR) and Snell’s Law. In the initial connection process, the angled ends of the fibers are joined together and a certain power of light is passed from one end to the other along with a core diameter (the core is the center part of the fiber). At the other end, the light is terminated by a photon detector which measures the intensity of the received light depending on the core diameter and the numerical aperture (the numerical aperture of a fiber is the numerical measure of the light’s ability to bend inside the fiber) of the fiber. The light signals are then terminated by a termination device on the receiver end (such as a splitter), which divides the light into its individual wavelengths and sends them to the appropriate fiber optic receiver. Usually, the photon detector at the receiver end is able to detect the intensity of the light and then measure the level of input and output of the light signal accordingly. In summary, fiber optic connectors are a type of optical connector mainly used for communication and sensing purposes. They are composed of two components, a ferrule that holds the fiber and a plastic body which locks it in the ferrule, and employ specialized tools and process for their installation. The working principle of fiber optic connectors is based on the principles of physics such as TIR and Snell’s Law.The specific data is subject to PDF, and the above content is for reference
