The 1F1T is an unidirectional solid state device with a high current PNP/NPN transistor pair connected as a diode bridge for alternating current load current. Its purpose is to convert AC line current it receives from an AC line source into DC current and regulate power distribution, providing a stable source of power to the load. This device is often referred to as the \'1F1TA.\'

The 1F1TA is often used in many types of high-current, wide-input DC-DC converters, such as buck and fly back converters, as well as high voltage rectifiers, inverters and other DC power supplies. In these applications, the 1F1TA provides a high-current, high speed switching action that allows for efficient power conversion, while providing a highly regulated DC output. Additionally, the 1F1TA eliminates the need for bulky and costly mechanical relay-based converters.

The 1F1TA is comprised of a NPN and PNP bipolar junction transistor (BJT) pair connected in the form of a diode bridge. The 1F1TA has two power terminals which are connected to the AC source, and two ground pins which are connected to the DC load. An internal gate structure controls the switching action of the 1F1TA. This gate structure comprises four MOSFETs connected together in a “four-transistor” configuration.

When the load is powered on, the four MOSFETs turn on in sequence to begin switching. The four MOSFETs, when on, create an electric field which turns the 1F1TA into an active portion of the circuit, and the gate voltage across the gate structure is increased with an applied bias voltage. This in turn creates a bipolar current flow across the two transistors, which generates a voltage drop across the power and ground terminals of the 1F1TA.

The voltage drop over the 1F1TA is then applied to the load, which results in a DC voltage across the load being maintained. This voltage is usually regulated to within a specified range by applying a compensation voltage to the gate of the 1F1TA. Depending on the specific application, this value can be as low as 0.7V and as high as 16V.

The 1F1TA can also be used in reverse polarity applications, where it can be used to provide protection against AC line power reversal. In this mode, the voltage over the 1F1TA is reversed, resulting in the AC line voltage being clamped closer to ground. This effectively reduces the peak switching losses in the AC line.

In summary, the 1F1TA is a versatile, reliable, high-speed switching device for DC–DC conversion, rectification and AC line protection, making it highly suited for power-supply applications. Furthermore, the 1F1TA eliminates the need for bulky and expensive mechanical relays, making it an attractive option for many power-supply designs.
