1N1189 Application Field and Working Principle

The 1N1189 is a single rectifier diode categorized under the element types of rectifiers, a type of diode used for efficient electrical current conversion from alternating current (AC) to direct current (DC). This conversion is accomplished through the physical properties of a rectifier, which are designed to permit only the unidirectional current flow from the anode to the cathode in a diode.

Rectifier Diodes

Rectifier diodes are electronic components suited for the conversion of AC to DC on a regular basis. The rectangular shape of the diode, with a single anode and cathode lead, functions as its primary characteristic. Electrical current can flow only one way from the anode to the cathode. When the applied voltage to the anode or cathode changes sign, the current flow will reverse.

A diode’s anode is a so-called “forward bias configuration,” meaning that when a positive voltage is applied to the anode, the current flow is enabled. This is called the forward current. When the voltage is reversed, the current flow is hindered due to the “reverse bias configuration,” and the diode will not be able to conduct current in the opposite direction. This is called the reverse current.

Hence, the 1N1189 Rectifier diode takes AC voltage and essentially chops off the negative half of the wave, leaving only the positive half, resulting in what is known as a “Rectified Voltage.”
