Typical applications for the 1N1345 diode include heavy-duty power rectification and protection, such as for surge suppression, lightning protection and noise suppression in power lines. It is also used in cathode ray tube (CRT) and thyristor circuits. The higher voltage rating of this diode is ideal for use in industrial power applications.

Working Principle

The 1N1345 is a single rectifier diode. It fits into a standard DO-41 case and is a high-voltage diode with a reverse breakdown voltage of 1300V at reverse current of 5mA. In forward bias operation its maximum forward current rating is 380mA and its forward voltage drop is 0.3V max. It has a power dissipation rating of 750mW, enabling it to be used in power rectification and protection applications.

The working principle of the 1N1345 diode is based on the fact that it has two p-n junctions. The p-n junction is formed between the negative pole of a semiconductor material (rectified by doping) and the positive pole of the other semiconductor material. The electrically positive junction is denoted by P and the electrically negative junction is denoted by N.

When the diode is in forward bias, the electrons from the N region are attracted to and cross the P-N junction, forming a large number of current carriers. This results in a large amount of current passing through the diode, with the voltage drop across it being very small. When the diode is in reverse bias, it has a high voltage drop due to the depletion region forming along the P-N junction.

When the 1N1345 diode is used in power-line applications, it is wired in parallel such that it rectifies the AC input using its low forward voltage drop, allowing the current to flow from the positive to the negative terminal of the device. The 1N1345 diode can also be used to protect circuits from electrical surges. It can be wired in series, such that when an electrical surge passes through the diode, it will not pass through the rest of the circuit.
