The 1N4116 (DO35) is a type of single-zone zener diode that has several application fields, one of the most popular uses being voltage regulation. Zener diodes achieve this type of regulation by operating in the reverse current breakdown mode, called the Zener effect, in which a voltage across the diode is limited to a value close to the breakdown voltage (VZ) of the zener diode. They are also used as components to protect electronic circuits from overvoltages, as voltage references and other applications where voltage control is needed.
The 1N4116 is an SOD-32 package, with maximum dimensions of 4.32 mm x 3.25 mm x 1.27 mm. Its peak non-repetitive surge power dissipation is 1.5 W and it can handle operating temperature ranges between -65°C to +150°C. By connecting a resistor between the cathode of the zener and ground, a voltage reference is formed as the current through the resistor and the zener can be adjusted.
The 1N4116 is also used as a current limiter. By connecting an emitter-base diode in series with the zener diode, the current through a circuit can be limited. In this configuration, the current flowing through the circuit is limited by the sum of the two diodes. This configuration protects the circuit from high currents that might damage the components.
The 1N4116 can be used as a switching component as well. When used with a P-channel MOSFET, it can be used to control the load of a circuit, turning it on or off. When the voltage of the circuit reaches the zener voltage, the zener begins to breakdown, switching on the MOSFET and connecting the load to the power source. When the zener is not connected, the load is disconnected from the power source.
