At a certain point, called the Zener voltage, the junction avalanche effect begins, causing a rapid increase in reverse current. The Zener diode acts like a resistor in series with the diode junction, limiting the current through the diode and keeping the voltage at the junction constant. This ensures that the output voltage remains constant. After the avalanche effect begins, the depletion layer around the p-n junction expands, reducing the reverse bias, which then reduces the amount of current through the diode and allows the voltage across the junction to decrease.
