Among the various types of diodes today, Zener diodes, a subset of diodes, are widely used in various applications. The 1N6027C, a major type of Zener diode, can be used in many fields. Application Field
The 1N6027C finds wide use for noise protections and circuit stabilizing, especially for small glass packages. Its noise protection application comes from its capability of protecting the system from overvoltage caused by switching transients. The 1N6027C is a Zenner diode that works like any other diode, however, instead of working by current flow, it works by voltage. When the voltage is below the breakdown voltage, or Zener break down value, no current is flowing. However, when the voltage exceeds this level, the Zener diode becomes highly conducting and the current will flow. As a result, the excess voltage is dissipated efficiently. The 1N6027C consists of a P-N junction, where it utilizes the interaction of electrons and holes in both sides of the junction and reverse biased electric field. When the electric field is across the junction, the majority carriers (electrons) from the P-side are attracted to the N-side of the junction. The same occurs for majority carriers from N-side. As a result, carriers flow from the P-side to the N-side, forming a depletion region between the sides, an area where no majority carriers exists. As the reverse-biased increases, the number of minority carriers starts increasing in the depletion region, eventually leading to the avalanche breakdown. This leads to current flowing across the junction.Conclusion
