1N728A is a semiconductor device having a reverse breakdown voltage of 7.5 Volts known as a Zener diode. It is a single diode, which has two current-carrying electrodes known as anode and cathode connected together. Unlike a regular diode, the 1N728A will pass current both ways and will also conduct in the opposite direction when sufficient voltage is applied.
The 1N728A is commonly used in applications where a stable voltage is needed and the circuit or device it is used in is not expected to draw current from the diode. Examples of such applications are voltage regulation, voltage clamping, voltage isolation, polarity protection and current limiting.
The working principle of the 1N728A is based on the fact that the reverse breakdown voltage of the PN-junction is directly proportional to the temperature and the doping level. When the applied voltage is below the forward voltage of the PN-junction, current will flow from anode to cathode (reverse current) but when the applied voltage is equal to or above the breakdown voltage, current will start to flow from cathode to anode and the voltage across the diode will be close to constant no matter how high the applied voltage is.
The benefit of this behavior of the 1N728A is that it can be used to preserve the voltage across a circuit against the changes in the applied voltage. When current passes through this diode, it will cause a voltage drop of up to seven volts (dependent on the current) in the one direction, which can then be used to power other devices in the circuit.
The 1N728A can also be used to provide electrical isolation between two circuits. When this device is placed in series with one circuit, it will block the flow of current between the two. This allows the circuits to be protected from shorting out and other types of electrical problems.
