TVS (transient voltage suppressor) diodes are surge suppressor devices designed to protect sensitive electronics from power surges that occur on their power lines. The 1SMB36AT3 is a silicon-avalanche bidirectional transil device that is specially designed for protecting components from high-voltage and high-energy transients. The working principle of the TVS diode 1SMB36AT3 is relatively simple. When the diodes are connected in series with the power lines, it provides a high impedance path when transients such as voltage spikes, oscillations or inductive transients occur. This path shorts the surge to ground and prevents the transients from reaching the powered electronic components, thus protecting them from damage. This path is created by a mechanism called “avalanche breakdown” where the potential energy of a surge is converted into heat and dissipated in the body of the diode.
The avalanche breakdown happens when the voltage applied to the TVS diode exceeds its breakdown voltage, i.e. the voltage that is required for the diode to suddenly start conducting current. At this point, the current begins to increase rapidly, creating a secondary voltage that further accelerates the current, causing it to “avalanche”. This causes the breakdown voltage of the diode to be exceeded by a much higher voltage, thus providing the protection.
The 1SMB36AT3 is designed to provide surge protection for a wide variety of circuits and applications, and is specifically designed for high-energy transient protection in varied environments. It is available in surface mount and through-hole packages, and its maximum peak surge power capabilities make it suitable for a wide range of applications.
