The SMC type provides better protection due to its ability to quickly detect and suppress overvoltage. The RPLF type offers improved protection due to its ability to prevent unwanted current from flowing between the electrodes. Additionally, the use of both types of GDTs in combination can provide greater protection as the current flow can be limited by the careful placement of the electrodes.
