Gas discharge tubes (GDTs) are devices utilized for the protection of equipment from transient over voltage supplied by the power source, or generated as a result of lightning striking the power line. The most commonly used type of GDT is the spark gap tube arrestor. This type of device is characterized by its electrical connecting structure that consists of two electrodes connected at a voltage breakdown point which are contained in a vacuum sealed container that has been filled with an inert gas. In addition to the spark gap tube arrestor, there are two other types of GDTs, namely the silicon carbide (SMC) and the resistor-plate lightning fuse (RPLF).

The 2015-60-SMC and RPLF GDTs were developed to replace the older spark gap designs since they offer greater protection and better response to transient changes. The SMC type GDT consists of two electrodes placed at a certain distance apart in an insulating material consisting of a silicon-carbide compound. This device operates on the principle of avalanche breakdown where electric charges accumulate and suddenly discharge through the gap, creating a spark. This spark can then selectively extinguish itself or become an arc across the gap.

In contrast to the SMC type GDT, the RPLF device operates on the principle of hot filament rectification. This mechanism involves a resistor-plate lightning fuse being placed between the two electrodes. When positive voltage potential is applied, it causes the resistor-plate to overheat, resulting in a conduction path between the electrodes. Thus, the main advantage of this type of GDT is that it prevents any unwanted current from flowing through the gap between the two electrodes.

In applications that require protection against power surges and line lightning, both the SMC and RPLF GDTs offer advantages over the spark gap designs they were designed to replace. The SMC type provides better protection due to its ability to quickly detect and suppress overvoltage. The RPLF type offers improved protection due to its ability to prevent unwanted current from flowing between the electrodes. Additionally, the use of both types of GDTs in combination can provide greater protection as the current flow can be limited by the careful placement of the electrodes.

In summary, the 2015-60-SMC and RPLF gas discharge tubes are ideal solutions for applications which require protection against power surges and line lightning. The SMC type offers better protection due to its ability to quickly detect and contain transients.
